Top 10 Logistics Companies To Watch For 2014

Refiners like Phillips 66(PSX), Valero Energy(VLO), Holly Frontier(HFC), Marathon Petroleum(MPC) and Tesoro (TSO) had a painful start to the year. The pain might be about to turn to gain, according to Barclays.

Bloomberg News

Barclays’Paul Cheng explains why:

While the US refining industry has seen headwinds with the narrowing Brent-LLS differential, we continue to believe the US refining segment will rank among the market best-performing groups over the next 1-2 years…

We believe that the narrow LLS-Brent differential during the past two months has primarily been the result of poor weather affecting both production and the logistics necessary to transport the production to refineries…

Cheng says investors should overweight the entire US refining industry, but is particularly fond of Valero Energy, which is “best positioned to take advantage of the changing Gulf Coast crude oil landscape,” and Tesoro, when “investors start to shift their focus to relative underperformers within the refining sector.”

Since then, several other indexes had been less hesitant to add Facebook to their ranks. Russell's indexes were among the first to include Facebook as a constituent, and as various lockup provisions expired to expand the stock's float, Russell responded earlier this year by boosting the social-media giant's weighting in several key indexes. The Nasdaq 100 brought on Facebook as a member a year ago, giving shareholders in PowerShares QQQ (NASDAQ: QQQ  ) the same conundrum that S&P index fund investors face today.

    2. Technology
The Technology Select Sector SPDR (NYSEMKT: XLK  ) weighs in with $10 billion in assets. It's much less popular among traders, with only 11 million shares trading on an average day. That's likely because the alternative Nasdaq-100 tracking PowerShares QQQ (NASDAQ: QQQ  ) is the favored ETF for tech exposure, as the Nasdaq includes most of the largest tech stocks in the market.

    The next step
The top end of the market has been doing well over the past two years, and Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS  ) and Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ: WYNN  ) have been the beneficiaries. Las Vegas Sands's Las Vegasrevenue was up 7% in the first quarter, while Wynn'swas up 6.6%. In at least one Texas bank and one Ohio credit union, 3D video banking is currently undergoing testing, according to TheFinancialBrand.com, a website for bank and credit union marketing executives. Three-dimensional video banking is similar to a consumer video conference with a bank representative –- only in this case, the executive looks like a living, breathing person sitting across from you. Thanks to theater surround sound, the representative also sounds as if they're in the same room. And since the consumer is interacting with a real person and not an automated hologram, the experience apparently isn't much different than the real thing. Banking and managing money isn't what it used to be. The 1970s and 1980s brought us the rise of the ATM. Consumers became acquainted with online banking during the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. The 2010s are shaping up as the era of mobile banking. That was underscored Sept. 10-11 in New York City when Mitek Systems Inc. (MITK), a San Diego-based technology company, debuted its Mobile Photo Account Opening product at Finovate, a trade show where banking tech products are often unveiled. The product allows consumers to open a bank account within 60 seconds. If you have your bank's app, you can use your smartphone's camera to take a photo of the front and back of your driver's license, and presto, your new checking, savings or credit card account is open. Here's a look at other financial products and services personal financial experts think we'll be using in the future. Within 10 years. "The economic payments system will begin to 'know us,' either through biometrics, optical sensor or facial recognition," says Joshua Siegel, managing principal of StoneCastle Partners, a New York-based asset management firm that invests in banks. That's already happening to some extent with smartphones –- the new Apple (AAPL) iPhone 5S, for example, uses fingerprint scanning to unlock the phone. Meanwhile, some fi

Advisors' Opinion:

In early August SemGroup (SEMG), an owner and operator of oil and gas midstream assets, including pipelines and storage and blending facilities, closed on an opportunistic purchase of assets from Chesapeake Energy. The assets nicely complement SemGroup's existing core assets that stretch from Colorado to Oklahoma. While SemGroup will have to spend money to complete the assetsoney that financially distressed Chesapeake likely could not justifye view the expenditures favorably given their high return characteristics. From Third Avenue Management's fourth quarter 2013 commentary.

The MLP was formed by midstream energy giant SemGroup (NYSE: SEMG), which acts as the general partner. RRMS had its IPO in December 2011 with an initial EV of $1.2 billion and a minimum yield of 4.7 percent.

In this video, Fool.com contributor Aimee Duffy discusses Chesapeake's most recent divestiture, and why the real winner in this $300 million deal is the buyer: Tulsa's SemGroup (NYSE: SEMG  ) .

Top 10 Logistics Companies To Watch For 2014: Imperial Holdings Inc. (IFT)

Imperial Holdings, Inc., through its subsidiaries, operates as a specialty finance company in the United States. The company operates in two business segments: Life Finance and Structured Settlements. The Life Finance segment comprises life settlements and finance loan businesses. The Structured Settlement segment purchases structured settlements at a discounted rate and sells such assets to third parties. This segment primarily markets its products through the Internet and television. Imperial Holdings, Inc. was founded in 2006 and is based in Boca Raton, Florida.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By DCResearch]

Imperial Holdings (IFT) fits the bill for all of those traits and investors today can buy Imperial Holdings for less than 0.75x book value. Upside to book value, an obvious valuation factor for most financial companies, would result in a greater than 40% return for a patient investor. I believe that this is far below the fair value for IFT book of life settlements, and upside is in excess of $13 per share.

  • [By Whopper Investments]

Note: This is my response to the recent short case on Imperial Finance (IFT). Obviously, all humans are fallible, and I'm sure someone can find just as much to argue with my long case as I found to argue with his short case. Please read for yourself, do your own research, and make your own decision. I am long IFT and plan on fully participating in the rights offering.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

    D. E. Shaw reduced its stake in lots of companies, including Acadia Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ACAD  ) and Exelixis (NASDAQ: EXEL  ) . Acadia has skyrocketed over the past year, rising more than 10-fold, on high hopes for its pimavanserin drug, which treats psychosis in patients with Parkinson's disease. If the drug gains FDA approval, it will enjoy little competition and could be a big winner for Acadia. The company thinks the drug might be effective against psychosis related to Alzheimer's disease as well and is conducting trials for that, too. Acadia is also raising about $100 million via a secondary stock offering to fund ongoing and future trials.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Call them hunches (because that's all they are), but now would be a great time to get out of a NanoTech Entertainment, Inc. (OTCMKTS:NTEK) position and/or get into an ACADIA Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:ACAD). NTEK looks like its reached its maximum potential - for the time being - while ACAD looks like it's ready to start rolling higher again.

  • [By Keith Speights]

    3. Acadia Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ACAD  )
There aren't any known deals in the works for Acadia, but it wouldn't be surprising if acquisition stories emerge in the not-too-distant future. Several factors could contribute to the small biotech ending up as a target for a larger player.

  • [By Eric Volkman]

ACADIA Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ACAD  ) will soon be almost $100 million richer, if a fresh stock issue goes as planned. The company is floating 8 million shares of its common stock in an underwritten public flotation, at a price of $12.50 apiece. Additionally, the firm's underwriters have been granted a 30-day purchase option for up to an additional 1.2 million shares to cover overallotments, if any.
