Hot Logistics Companies To Watch For 2014

Waterloo, Ontario-based Descartes Systems Group (NASDAQ: DSGX  ) has acquired KSD Software Norway AS, a company described as a "leading Scandinavia-based provider of electronic customs filing solutions for the European Union ('EU')."

On Thursday, Descartes -- itself a logistics technology solutions provider -- announced that it has paid $33 million to acquire KSD, a price offset somewhat by the $2 million in working capital that came with KSD. In addition to the cash, KSD brings with it a customer base of more than 1,300, most based in Scandinavia.

Edward Ryan, Chief Commercial Officer at Descartes, noted that KSD has about $10 million in annual recurring revenues. He suggested that the purchase price Descartes is paying approximates 3.1-times annual sales -- a significant discount to the 5.2x sales valuation at Descartes, proper.

Perhaps in response to the apparent good deal Descartes is getting, the company's shares rose 2.8% in Thursday trading, to close at $10.73.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Smith]

The Department of Defense awarded a dozen separate contracts today, worth $949.1 million in aggregate. Nearly half the dollar value was accounted for by a single contract let out for environmental remediation services in New Jersey. But even so, several companies managed to win sizable contracts of their own, including:

  • [By Rich Smith]

Defense contractor Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC  ) landed a pair of Pentagon contracts Thursday, worth nearly $38 million in aggregate.

The larger of the two contracts, valued at $26 million, is a firm-fixed-price contract to modify and install Northrop's AN/AAQ-24(V) Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) System aboard a pair of Airbus A319CJ "Head of State" aircraft by March 31, 2016.

  • [By Katie Spence]

    The money is running dry
Defense spending is being slashed left and right, which means the Pentagon is making hard decisions when it comes to military needs. Currently, there are a number of programs that the Pentagon is unwilling to sacrifice, such as Lockheed Martin's (NYSE: LMT  ) F-35 fighter, Huntington Ingalls Industries' (NYSE: HII  ) CVN-78 aircraft carrier, and Northrop Grumman's (NYSE: NOC  ) RQ-4 Global Hawk drones -- good news for these guys. Then, there are other programs that the Pentagon has deemed less critical. That includes Boeing's C-17 contract.

  • [By Rich Smith]

Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC  ) came away with more contract wins than anyone else Tuesday on the Pentagon's supplier list, scoring two contracts worth nearly $53 million, combined.
