5 Best Tech Stocks To Own For 2014

Apple designed an iPhone controller for third-party developers.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) In June, Apple quietly slipped in the fact that iOS 7 would begin supporting third-party gaming controllers. Since then, we've heard next to nothing from Apple.

But Apple's gaming strategy will soon emerge, and chances are it will involve more than just a few pieces of hardware. How far Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) goes with this is uncertain, but it not only has the potential to expand the scope of gaming on the iPhone and iPad, but also the Apple TV and its line of computers.

What little the world knows about Apple's concrete plans comes mostly from Apple and its hardware partners. Apple released schematics for what third-party iOS controllers should look like (which also revealed that OS X might get in on the fun). Companies such as Logitech (LOGI), ClamCase and Moga followed suit, and they have been teasing their upcoming products since September. And updates to a handful of existing iOS games have included bits about supporting "Made for iPhone" controllers in their release logs.

This week at the WSJ All Things Digital conference in California, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) CEO Tim Cook said that Apple has "several more game changers." Cook also said that he didn't think Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) glasses would appeal to the mainstream. What should investors make of the Apple CEO's latest musings? Is Cook smart to raise expectations? In this installment of Motley Fool Money, our analysts tackle those questions.

www.take2games.com Sometimes, the right answer when a potential suitor appears before you on bended knee is "Yes." But there's been no shortage of attractive offers getting spurned on Wall Street. Sometimes those offers just don't make sense: Boards aren't ready to sell; shareholders think their stock is worth more, and vote down the deals. AstraZeneca (AZN) recently became the latest big company to refuse a suitor's advances. Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer (PFE) was shot down last week after making a $117 billion offer for AstraZeneca. Pfizer claims that was its final offer; apparently, it wasn't enough. Sometimes, those disinterested companies are better off on their own. However, for every Facebook (FB) that correctly scoffed at a large figure (offered $1 billion, it's worth north of $150 billion today), there are many companies that lived to regret turning down. Here are five companies whose owners really should have taken the money and run. Circuit City Circuit City is gone. The consumer electronics superstore chain filed for bankruptcy, liquidating all of its stores in 2009. It didn't have to go out that way. There was no shortage of companies proposing to take over the once-vibrant retailer. It turned down private equity firms that wanted to pay $8 a share in 2003 and then $17 a share in 2005. Blockbuster Video -- yes, that Blockbuster -- even started to make buyout overtures in 2008. Blockbuster was hoping that teaming up with Circuit City would create "an $18 billion retail enterprise uniquely positioned for the convergence of media content and electronic devices." It never panned out. Circuit City was out of business less than a year later. Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) Weeks before Take-Two Interactive's "Grand Theft Auto IV" hit stores in 2008, Electronic Arts (EA) initiated a hostile takeover. It offered to pay $26 a share for Take-Two, but with the game expected to set industry sales records (which it eventually did), there was little reason

Advisors' Opinion:

    Also in the news...
Network infrastructure products provider QLogic (NASDAQ: QLGC  ) may have ended the week higher by about 1%, but it certainly got no help from Morgan Stanley, which downgraded the company to underweight from equal weight, and cut its price target to $9. Morgan Stanley cited the expectation of weak enterprise server demand in relation to businesses shifting to cloud providers as its reasoning for the downgrade. As a shareholder, I'm not too concerned, because of QLogic's hefty cash position, steady profits, and ability to stay on the leading edge of the innovative curve.

    This week's loser
On the other side of the coin was networking equipment maker QLogic (NASDAQ: QLGC  ) , which tanked 4.8% on the week after disclosing that its CEO, Simon Biddiscombe, had resigned on Friday. In the interim, QLogic's CFO, Jean Hu, will be the acting CEO. Anytime the management of a company changes, it provides a level of uncertainty that's bound to unnerve investors. I'd urge current shareholders (of which I'm one) to remember that QLogic has been consistently profitable for years, has $5 in net cash per share, and is poised to benefit from higher infrastructure spending. Patience will pay off here!

  • [By Sean Williams]

Shareholders in networking equipment maker QLogic (NASDAQ: QLGC  ) certainly have a reason to rejoice, as it will be added to the S&P Small Cap 600 as of the close of business on Friday. Being added to the S&P Small Cap 600 index will mean that mutual funds that track the index will be required to purchase shares of QLogic. With more than $5 in cash per share on its balance sheet, the downside risk in QLogic is quickly abating.

  • [By Eric Volkman]

QLogic (NASDAQ: QLGC  ) is soon to become a slimmer company. The firm announced that it will implement a restructuring plan this year, in a move to "streamline business operations with the goal of driving long-term profitable growth." The effort will include a reduction in employee numbers. QLogic did not say how many jobs might be affected.
