Hot Supermarket Companies For 2014

Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty Images CAMDEN, N.J. -- Campbell Soup reported that its second-quarter profit and revenue came in above Wall Street expectations Friday, helped by the later Thanksgiving. The company said sales for its U.S. Simple Meals division rose 7 percent, lifted by higher volumes and prices and the acquisition of Plum Organics. U.S. soup sales rose 5 percent, in part because a later Thanksgiving pushed shipments to retailers back into the quarter. For the first half of the year, soup sales are still down 1 percent. Campbell Soup Co. (CPB), based in Camden, N.J., is working to find ways to boost sales of its canned soups. The company is contending with the wide availability of fresh soup in the hot food bars of supermarkets. It's also trying to update the image of its soups, and has introduced new packaging and flavors designed to appeal to a younger crowd. For the period ended Jan. 26, Campbell earned $325 million, or $1.03 a share. That compares with $190 million, or 60 cents a share, a year ago. Not including discontinued operations of its recently sold European business, Campbell said adjusted earnings were 76 cents a share, above the 73 cents a share Wall Street expected. Revenue rose to $2.28 billion, also above the $2.27 billion analysts expected, according to FactSet. The company stood by its 2014 outlook for core sales to grow by 4 percent to 5 percent and earnings a share to grow by 2 percent to 4 percent, or $2.53 to $2.58 a share. Campbell's shares rose $1.38, or 3.3 percent, to $42.35 in premarket trading. Pre-made soups can contain a large number of ingredients containing GMOs. For instance, Campbell's (CPB) popular condensed Tomato Soup lists high fructose corn syrup as its second biggest ingredient. According to the Non-GMO Project, nearly 88 percent of all corn planted in the United States is GMO.

Alamy McDonald's (MCD) has been struggling to heat up its sales for more than a year, but let's not assume that all fast food chains are in the same boat. In fact, as McDonald's tries to upgrade its menu with premium-priced items and update its eateries with fancy decor, free Wi-Fi, and barista-brewed coffee beverages, a much smaller rival is doing just fine with a throwback business model and menu. At a time when many of its more modern peers are struggling to ring up sales, Sonic (SONC) -- the chain of drive-in restaurants where some orders are still delivered to parked cars by carhops on roller skates -- is doing just fine. Retro Chic Sonic reported another solid quarter on Monday. Same-restaurant sales rose 2.2 percent for its fiscal quarter ending in November. Margins improved to the point where adjusted earnings per share climbed 18 percent with the help of an aggressive share buyback plan. McDonald's doesn't operate on the same fiscal calendar, but we know that same-restaurant sales in the U.S. declined 0.8 percent in November and were up a mere 0.2 percent in October. McDonald's is the world's largest burger chain, but it's had several months since Oct. 2012 where it failed to drum up more sales than it did a year earlier. Meanwhile, Sonic is on a roll. This isn't a fluke. Sonic posted a 5.9 percent surge in same-restaurant sales during its summer quarter. Zigging When McDonald's Zags Sonic and McDonald's both serve cheap burgers, but what's more interesting to consider is where the two companies are going in different directions. McDonald's has been on a health kick lately. It's been promoting its grilled chicken salads and recently added breakfast sandwiches made with egg whites. Sonic, on the other hand, is crediting no small part of the success of its most recent quarter to its milkshakes and new Cheesecake Bites. Consumers may talk about eating healthier, but they do something else when they're eating out. We're seeing this in the chain

    4 (tie). Colorado
Colorado's beer excise taxes also come in at $0.08 per gallon, perhaps reflecting the importance of the Coors brand of Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) to the state's overall economy. That's a trend you'll see elsewhere on the list, as well as with Massachusetts, which just barely missed the list at No. 7 and provides the headquarters for craft-brew specialist Boston Beer (NYSE: SAM  ) . Per-capita beer consumption of 30.9 gallons per year leaves Colorado at No. 20 nationwide.

As the owner of both hard liquor and beer lines, Diageo must split its focus along two fronts. In spirits it must grapple against its two primary foes, Brown-Forman (NYSE: BF-B  ) , maker of Jack Daniel's and Southern Comfort, and Beam (NYSE: BEAM  ) , which (surprise, surprise!) makes Jim Beam, as well as Maker's Mark and other brands of spirits. In beer, it goes up against domestic and global giants like Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD  ) and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) .

Alcatel-Lucent S.A. (NYSE: ALU) is a top name to buy at Raymond James. In fact the optical products company makes the list of top stock picks. The ill-fated merger between the two companies has taken many years and many CEOs to find any traction. However, the big carriers are starting to increase orders, and the company is getting a nice share of them. Raymond James has a $4.50 price target. The consensus estimate is at $3. The stock closed yesterday at $3.58.

24/7 Wall St. wanted to stack Cisco up against peers such as Alcatel-Lucent, S.A. (NYSE: ALU) and Juniper Networks, Inc. (NYSE: JNPR). We also wanted to see what the analyst community is saying now that the dust is settling. Cisco trades at under 11-times forward earnings and 2.5-times expected sales now. With cash still growing, it now has close to $48 billion in cash that can be used for share buybacks, dividends, and acquisitions.

NSN is a joint venture with Siemens (SI) in the field of telecoms infrastructure. Its chief competitors are the likes of Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), Ericsson (ERIC) and yes, Huawei. As the latter is a rather opaquely-owned Chinese company, we cannot use it to help create a valuation for NSN. However, I believe using the first two companies mentioned is sufficient to give us a decent indication of NSN's true value.

Buffalo Wild Wings faces stiff competition from McDonald's Corp(MCD), Darden Restaurants Inc. (DRI) and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (CMG). Last year, McDonald faced chicken wing problem and was left with 10 million pounds of unsold chicken wings. This made Buffalo Wild Wings to secure its position. Further, it was selling wings by the portion instead of by the number. Darden Restaurants is not performing well, and its fiscal second-quarter earnings missed consensus by a large margin. Its key brand Olive Garden also underperformed for the majority of fiscal 2013. Further, the company is planning to spin off its Red Lobster brand. Shares of Darden Restaurants (DRI) are up 2.80% to $50.33 today potentially on news that the former president of Olive Garden has been retained by activist shareholder Starboard Value, which has a 5.5% stake in Darden, the restaurant conglomerate that owns Red Lobster and Olive Garden.

Bradley Blum, the former president of Olive Garden and former CEO of Burger King (BKW), was retained as an advisor to Starboard in return for a $50,000 fee, which he will use to purchase shares of Darden, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. Blum is currently the owner of BLUM Enterprises, described in the filing as a progressive restaurant company focused on creating and operating new restaurant brands.

Starboard asked Darden earlier this year to delay its planned spinoff of Red Lobster and look at other options to increase the value of the company. Shares may be up on speculation that Starboard could put Blum forward as a board member if a proxy battle occurs.
