Ever heard of the butterfly effect? You know, the idea that a butterfly flapping its wings in Liberia today might cause a hurricane in Brazil next week? There's a live demonstration of that ripple effect going on right now.

Earlier today, a Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) 787 Dreamliner caught fire while parked and unoccupied at London's Heathrow airport. Boeing has not yet explained what caused the fire aboard this Ethiopian Airlines plane, but Dreamliners have suffered internal fires before due to faulty batteries. The battery issue kept Dreamliners grounded for three months, and Boeing couldn't deliver any new planes until the battery system was redesigned.

So there's reason to believe that something might be amiss with the 787 again, which would be bad news for Boeing indeed.

The fire didn't just damage some expensive airline property, but splashed collateral damage all over the place. Heathrow -- one of the world's busiest airports -- was shut down for about an hour, judging by Heathrow's official Twitter feed. Boeing shares have plunged 3.2% as of 1:50 p.m. EDT due to fears of another sales halt, erasing much of the recent share-price recovery. In the process, Boeing shaved 26 points off the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) , single-handedly turning the index's gains into minor losses.

    Southwest Airlines (LUV) has gained 28% this year. Delta Air Lines (DAL) has risen 35%. American Airlines (AAL) has advanced 44%. And United Continental (UAL)? It’s gained just 7.1% in 2014.

    Clearly, the market thinks something is wrong with United Continental. Wolfe Research’s Hunter Keay and Jared Shojaian explain what that might be:

    We believe [United Continental] has a structural deficiency relative to peers. We believe this deficiency is partly a result of a network that is too large and uses planes that are not optimized for the routes they serve. We believe in order to fix this problem there must be a willingness to forego revenues in order to save costs. We believe bad IT and poor customer service metrics exacerbated the problem, but good IT and better customer service can�� completely fix it. We believe planes need to be put down without replacement, we believe the associated headcount must be evaluated, and we believe a hard and honest evaluation of the value of the current network will yield a difficult conclusion: fewer planes, fewer cities served, and less revenue might result in lower costs and higher profits. We believe current�[United Continental] management will get there.

    Just how big a problem is United Continental’s size? Consider: United Continental flies 1,623 different route combinations, 58% more than Delta Air Lines and 65% more than American Airlines, Keay and�Shojaian say.     The airline will undoubtedly pounce on the likely failings of rival companies, though this is also an area where easyJet will be eager to move in. Spanair is gone as is Malev Zrt, two former Ryanair rivals. Air France-KLM (AFLYY.PK) and Iberia are in trouble, among other European airlines. Ryanair will take advantage of such weaknesses in its aim of becoming Europe's out-and-out dominant short-haul carrier. As other airlines cut routes, airports are now looking to Ryanair to take up the newly available airport space. As a result of this, with "opportunities opening up in Germany, Scandinavia and Central Europe" in particular, Ryanair's deputy chief executive, Howard Millar sees the Irish company increase its market share from 15 percent to 20 percent before the end of the decade.
